What is a bill of materials?
Summary
A bill of materials lists every part of a pipeline with quantity, size, material and standard. It is the basis for ordering, prefabrication and the cost estimate.
What it contains
| Column | Example |
|---|---|
| Position | 1, 2, 3 |
| Description | Elbow 90° long radius, weld neck flange, spiral wound gasket |
| Size | DN 100 or NPS 4, with wall thickness or schedule |
| Material | P235GH, ASTM A106 Grade B, 1.4404 |
| Standard | EN 10253, ASME B16.9, EN 1092-1 |
| Quantity | Pieces or metres |
Pipes, fittings and connection material
Pipes are listed in metres and are often rounded up to whole lengths for ordering. Fittings and flanges are counted per piece. Each flange joint needs a gasket and a bolt set; these are easily forgotten when a list is counted from a drawing.
Per drawing, spool or project
- On an isometric drawing, the bill of materials covers that drawing.
- For prefabrication, the bill of materials is made per spool.
- For purchasing, the totals per project are used.
From bill of materials to cost estimate
The bill of materials is the basis of the material cost in an estimate. The welds of the line determine a large part of the installation hours, often expressed in inch-dia.
In FlowCAD3D
The bill of materials follows from the 3D model. Flanges, gaskets and bolt sets are added automatically, and welds are registered. Export to XLSX and CSV; the cost estimate uses the bill of materials with the article file and the price list of the company. More: Piping bill of materials from the 3D model.
