What is a PCF file?

Updated

Summary

A PCF (Piping Component File) is a text file that describes a pipeline component by component, so that other programs can make isometric drawings or calculations from it.

The format

PCF is a plain text format, originally developed for the isometric software ISOGEN. A file starts with general information, such as the units (UNITS-BORE, UNITS-CO-ORDS) and the line number (PIPELINE-REFERENCE). Then follows one block per component: pipe, elbow, tee, reducer, flange, valve, gasket, bolt set or weld.

Each block contains the end points with their coordinates and nominal size (END-POINT), and attributes such as the item code (ITEM-CODE), the description, the material and the specification. Because the format is text, a PCF can be read and checked in any text editor.

What PCF is used for

Points of attention

A PCF describes one line and its components; it does not contain the surrounding building, steel or equipment. Each program reads the attributes it knows. Before exchanging files, it is useful to agree with the recipient on the units, the attributes and the naming of the specification.

PCF and other formats

For complete models, other formats are more suitable: IFC for building and installation models, STEP for exact solids. PCF remains the common format for a single line with its components.

In FlowCAD3D

The 3D model is exported to PCF for ISOGEN and other programs. Drawing sheets are also exported to DXF, SVG and PDF, and models to STEP AP214.
